The Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership which supports the railway running between Norwich and Sheringham has funded and installed ten new planters at Sheringham station, helping to keep the station as a welcoming gateway to the town.
Volunteers from the Bittern Line and sister Community Rail Partnership, the Wherry Lines along with station adopters from West Runton joined Sheringham station volunteer Sheila McGinley to install the new wooden planters, replacing five that had become worn and damaged.
Sheila, who has volunteered at the station for over 20 years was then able to transfer some existing plants to the new containers along with some new Summer-bedding creating an attractive display. Sheila said: “I am grateful to the Bittern Line for providing the new planters and for the help from Wherry Lines and West Runton volunteers to install them.”
Dave Pearce Chair of the Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership added; “We are delighted to have been able to fund and help install new planters for the platform at Sheringham, especially as Sheila does such a magnificent job keeping the station as an attractive gateway for many thousands of visitors to the town.”
Sheringham station recently received accreditation from Norfolk Wildlife Trust for supporting bees, butterflies and other wildlife through planting and the creation of a special secret garden behind the platform.

With over 270,000 users per year, Sheringham is one of the busiest stations on the Bittern Line which itself saw over 820,000 passenger journeys made in 2025. The original Sheringham station, just across the road is now home to the North Norfolk Heritage Railway. Along with Lowestoft station, both of Sheringham’s railway stations recently featured on Channel 4 Television series, Britain’s Favourite Railway Station’s presented by former Hairy Biker Si King.
Over the last year the Bittern Line Community Rail Partnership have also provided new planters at West Runton and Hoveton & Wroxham stations.
